my freelancing journey

I built my website design business on Upwork in 2015 - but I never wanted to depend on Upwork for my income stream, so I immediately set out to build up the systems I needed to find and work with clients off Upwork as well.

Upwork is a great marketplace to find clients, but let's be honest, not everyone on the platform is looking to pay good rates, and 10% is a decent cut of your income.

In order to reach clients off of Upwork, I made sure my business was super specific in terms of who it served. This allowed me to build out marketing and referral systems that reduced my dependence on Upwork. (And it actually helped me to win clients there too - still does).

In order to confidently pitch and work with clients off of Upwork, I developed sales systems that both assured prospective clients that I was professional and trustworthy, and helped me to reduce or automate the admin that came with proposals, project management, contracts and getting paid.

Today, I run a (low) six-figure business. I still work with clients from Upwork but they come to me from lots of other places too!
